How To Set Up A Website
Step-By-Step Guide On Creating A Website
Step #1: Setting Up A Website.
Three things necessary to set up a website:
- Domain name – A website name that’s chosen and this is your online real estate.
- Hosting – Where data is stored on the website.
- Website – an Actual place where you build the site
Step #2: Get a domain name
So what is a domain name?
Domain names are easy-to-remember words that we can use to communicate to a DNS server the website we want to visit. The Domain Name System (DNS) is what translates the friendly name to an IP address.
Somewhat like international phone numbers, the domain name system gives every server a memorable and easy-to-spell address, such as sojyjohn.com.
The domain name hides the IP address that most people aren’t interested in seeing or using, like the 220.127.116.11 address used by sojyjohn.com.
In other words, it’s much easier to type “sojyjohn.com” in your web browser than it is to remember and enter the IP address that the website uses. This is why domain names are so incredibly useful.
Some of the hosting providers like Bluehost, Hostgator gives you the option to get a domain name.
To get a domain name, I would suggest using Namecheap.com or Godaddy.com which have cheap plans.
I personally use Namecheap and you can signup with name cheap using Namecheap.com
Once the account is created, you just log in and search for a proper domain name. The name of the website you are trying to create. It can be probably yourname.com or yourcompanyname.com etc.
If the domain is available, you can go ahead and do the purchase, else it will show other options.
I would suggest going for a name which is 3 words or less according to your choice. Also, remember to go with a “.com” website.
I’m just giving an example below of how the search can be done. If the domain name is available, you can buy it, else look for another one.
As you see, the domain names are so cheap and costs around 10 USD/Yr. Add it to cart and buy the domain name.
You have a name, now you need a body 🙂
Step #3: Setup hosting
Now you can proceeed to Hostgator and create an account.
Select one plan, I would suggest the baby hosting plan. It’s worth the money because it gives reduced rates for three years and you can host unlimited domains.
Which implies that, in future, if you want to set up more websites, you can use the same plan, nothing extra has to be paid for 3 years.
If at all you are tight in budget and want to try out kinds of stuff, go with the hatchling plan for a year or so. So it’s up to you.
The plans I mentioned above can be seen when you click on “Get Started” from the link I provided.
Step #4: connect The Hosting with the domain you created in step #2.
Once you are done with the order at Hostgator, you will receive an email from Hostgator with details of the billing system and your cPanel details as below.
From the above mail, you will get the Nameserver details. Here, its ns***.hostgator.com. You may need this to be used in your domain name. Now we go back to Namecheap and add the two nameservers from here to custom DNS.
It can be done as below.
First, log in to Namecheap.com using your username and password created at STEP #2. Then, navigate to Dashboards -> “The domain name you created” -> Manage.
You should see something like below. From there, in NameServers Option, select Custom DNS and add the two name servers. Please note that the two name servers are different. Also, it may take some delay to set this up.
Step #5: Install WordPress in your website from Cpanel
So, now you have a name and a body, the next part is adding flesh to your website 🙂
From the mail you received from Hostgator, you will have the control panel details. Now is the time to log in to the control panel using the information provided.
From the control panel, search for WordPress and you will get the below option.
Setup word press in the domain. From Next screen, just select the domain name from the dropdown and leave the directory field empty.
Press Next and you will be shown a screen where you may have to enter details about your Site Name, Site Description and also you will get an option to select the admin password.
This will be later used to login to the WordPress dashboard. This installation will take less than 5 minutes to complete.
WOW!!! That’s it, your website should be ready by now. You can now access your website which has WordPress installed and you can visit the site’s Dashboard using the link http://yourwesite.com/wp-admin
Step #6 setup the website from the dashboard.
WordPress dashboard is where the building of the website actually begins.
Pick a theme and start building out entire website. YOU ARE NOW A PROUD OWNER OF A WEBSITE 🙂
